Honda Pilot: Steering Column/EPS Control Unit Removal and Installation

Removal

NOTE:

  • SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, and the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service.
  • Do not release the lock lever until the steering column/EPS control unit is installed. If the lock lever is released before installation, adjust the steering column after installation.

1. Steering Column Tilt and Telescopic Position - Set

  1. Set the steering column to the center tilt position, and to the center telescopic position.

2. 12 Volt Battery Terminal - Disconnect

3. Driver's Airbag - Remove

4. Steering Wheel - Remove

5. Front Door Sill Trim - Remove

6. Kick Panel - Remove

7. Center Console Side Cover - Remove (Driver's Side)

8. Steering Joint - Disconnect

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the steering joint cover (A).
  2. Hold the spline shaft (B) on the column with a piece of wire (C) between the joint yoke (D) of the spline shaft and the joint yoke (E) of the spline tube to prevent the lower spline shaft from pulling out.
  3. Remove the steering joint bolt (F).
  4. Disconnect the steering joint (G) from the pinion shaft (H).

    NOTE:

    • If the center guide (I) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place.
    • If the center guide has come off, discard it.

9. Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover - Remove

10.Column Cover - Remove

11.Combination Switch/Wire Harness - Remove

  1. Disconnect the connectors (A).

USA models

Canada and Mexico models

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the harness clips (B).
  2. Remove the combination switch (C) from the steering column shaft.

12.Steering Column/EPS Control Unit - Remove

Installation

NOTE:

  • SRS components are located in this area. Review the SRS component locations, and the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service.
  • Do not release the lock lever until the steering column/EPS control unit is installed. If the lock lever is released before installation, adjust the steering column after installation.

1. Steering Column - Install

  1. Install the steering column/EPS control unit (A).

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Tighten a new attaching bolts (B) to the specified torque in the numbered sequence shown.

2. Combination Switch - Install

  1. Install the combination switch (A).

USA models

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

Canada and Mexico models

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Tighten the screws (B) in the numbered sequence shown.
  2. Connect the connectors (C).
  3. Install the clips (D).

3. Column Cover - Install

4. Driver's Dashboard Lower Cover - Install

5. Steering Joint - Connect

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Cut the wire (A).
  2. Slip the lower end of the steering joint (B) onto the pinion shaft (C).

NOTE:

  • Pinion shaft with center guide: Install the steering joint by aligning the center guide (D).
  • Pinion shaft without center guide: Position the steering column by aligning the gap (E) within the angle.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Align the bolt hole (A) on the steering joint with the groove (B) around the pinion shaft.
  2. Loosely install a new steering joint bolt (C).
  3. Be sure that the joint bolt is securely in the groove in the pinion shaft.
  4. Tighten the steering joint bolt to the specified torque.

    NOTE: Install the steering joint bolt and tighten it within 5 minutes using the specified tightening torque.

  5. Pull on the steering joint to make sure that the steering joint is fully seated.
  6. Install the steering joint cover (D).

    NOTE: Check the steering joint cover for damage and cracks. If the steering joint cover is cracked, replace the steering joint cover.

6. Center Console Side Cover - Install (Driver's Side)

7. Kick Panel - Install

8. Front Door Sill Trim - Install

9. Steering Wheel - Install

10.Driver's Airbag - Install

11.12 Volt Battery Terminal - Connect

12.Steering - Check

  1. After installation, check these items:
  • Start the engine, allow it to idle, and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times.
  • Check that the EPS indicator does not come on.
  • Check the steering wheel spoke angle. If steering spoke angles to the right and left are not equal (steering wheel and rack are not centered), correct the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.

13.Wheel Alignment - Check

14.VSA Sensor Neutral Position - Memorization

15.Steering Angle Sensor Neutral Position - Clear
