Honda Pilot: Cylinder Head Cover Removal and Installation

Removal

Front

1. Connector (Front Secondary HO2S) - Disconnect

2. Intake Manifold - Remove

3. Front Cylinder Ignition Coil - Remove

4. Connector and Positive Cable (Alternator) - Disconnect

5. Front Cylinder Head Cover Harness Holder - Move

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the connectors (A).
  2. Remove the harness clips (B) and the connector clamp (C).
  3. Move the front cylinder head cover harness holder (D).

6. Front Cylinder Head Cover - Remove

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the front cylinder head cover.
  2. Remove the heat insulator (A) as needed.

Rear

1. Intake Manifold - Remove

2. Rear Cylinder Ignition Coil - Remove

3. Connector (Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Sensor) - Disconnect

NOTE: Remove the rocker arm oil pressure sensor harness clips from the timing belt rear upper cover at the same time.

4. Harness Holder - Move

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the connectors (A) and the ground cable (B).
  2. Remove the harness clips (C) and the harness holder clamps (D).
  3. Move the harness holder (E).

5. Rear Cylinder Head Cover Harness Holder - Move

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the harness clip (A).
  2. Disconnect the breather hose (B).
  3. Disconnect the connectors (C).
  4. Move the rear cylinder head cover harness holder (D).

6. Rear Cylinder Head Cover - Remove

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the rear cylinder head cover.
  2. Remove the heat insulator (A) as needed.

Installation

Front

1. Head Cover Gasket - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Check the spark plug seals (A) for damage. If any seals are damaged, replace it.
  2. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket (B) and the groove of the cylinder head cover (C).

    NOTE: Check and if necessary, replace the head cover gasket.

  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover. Make sure the head cover gasket is seated securely.

2. Front Cylinder Head Cover - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Apply liquid gasket to the front rocker arm oil control valve mating surfaces.
  2. Set the spark plug seals (A) on the spark plug tubes, and install the front cylinder head cover, then loosely install the front cylinder head cover mounting bolts.
  3. Inspect the spark plug seals for damage.
  4. If the heat insulator (B) removed, install the heat insulator.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Tighten the bolts in three steps; tighten the bolts until the bolts sit on the front cylinder head cover, tighten the bolts until the gasket is compressed, tighten the bolts to specified torque.

3. Front Cylinder Head Cover Harness Holder - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Install the front cylinder head cover harness holder (A).
  2. Connect the connectors (B).
  3. Install the harness clips (C) and the connector clamp (D).
  4. Tighten the front cylinder head cover harness holder mounting bolts (E).

4. Connector and Positive Cable (Alternator) - Connect

5. Front Cylinder Ignition Coil - Install

6. Intake Manifold - Install

7. Connector (Front Secondary HO2S) - Connect

Rear

1. Head Cover Gasket - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Check the spark plug seals (A) for damage. If any seals are damaged, replace it.
  2. Thoroughly clean the head cover gasket (B) and the groove of the cylinder head cover (C).

    NOTE: Check and if necessary, replace the head cover gasket.

  3. Install the head cover gasket in the groove of the cylinder head cover. Make sure the head cover gasket is seated securely.

2. Rear Cylinder Head Cover - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Apply liquid gasket to the rear rocker arm oil control valve mating surfaces.
  2. Set the spark plug seals (A) on the spark plug tubes, and install the rear cylinder head cover, then loosely install the rear cylinder head cover mounting bolts.
  3. Inspect the spark plug seals for damage.
  4. If the heat insulator (B) removed, install the heat insulator.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Tighten the bolts in three steps; tighten the bolts until the bolts sit on the rear cylinder head cover, tighten the bolts until the gasket is compressed, tighten the bolts to specified torque.

3. Rear Cylinder Head Cover Harness Holder - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Install the rear cylinder head cover harness holder (A).
  2. Connect the connectors (B).
  3. Tighten the rear cylinder head cover harness holder mounting bolts (C).
  4. Connect the breather hose (D).
  5. Install the harness clip (E).

4. Harness Holder - Install

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Install the harness holder (A) and the harness clips (B).
  2. Connect the connectors (C) and the ground cable (D).

5. Connector (Rocker Arm Oil Pressure Sensor) - Connect

NOTE: Install the rocker arm oil pressure sensor harness clips to the timing belt rear upper cover at the same time.

6. Rear Cylinder Ignition Coil - Install
