Honda Pilot: Starter Removal, Installation, and Performance Test

Removal/Installation

1. 12 Volt Battery Terminal - Disconnect

2. Starter - Remove

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the positive cable (A) and the connector (B).

3. All Removed Parts - Install

  1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

    NOTE: Make sure the crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect the positive cable.

Test

1. Starter Performance - Test

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Clamp the starter firmly in a vise.
  2. Disconnect the motor wire from the M terminal.
  3. Make the connections for this test using the thickest (gauge) wire possible (preferably the same gauge as used on the vehicle).

    NOTE: To avoid damaging the starter, never leave the 12 volt battery connected for more than 5 seconds.

  4. Connect the 12 volt battery as shown. If the starter pinion moves out, it is working properly.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the 12 volt battery from the M terminal. If the pinion does not retract, the hold-in coil of the solenoid is working properly.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the 12 volt battery from the starter body. If the pinion retracts immediately, it is working properly.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Reconnect the wire to the M terminal.
  2. Connect the starter to the 12 volt battery as shown, and confirm that the motor runs.
  3. If the electric current meets the specification when the 12 volt battery voltage is at 11.5 V, the starter is working properly.

Specification

  Electric Current: 90 A or less

Starter Removal, Installation, and Performance Test

Removal/Installation

NOTE: With auto idle stop system, if the starter is replaced, replace starter cut relay 1 and starter cut relay 2 at the same time.

1. Air Cleaner - Remove

2. 12 Volt Battery - Remove

3. 12 Volt Battery Box - Remove

4. Harness Holder - Move

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the connector clamp (A).
  2. Move the harness holder (B).

5. Skid Block - Remove

6. Starter - Remove

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Remove the harness clamp (A).
  2. Disconnect the positive cable (B) and the connectors (C).
  3. Remove the starter.

7. All Removed Parts - Install

  1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

    NOTE: Make sure the crimped side of the ring terminal faces away from the starter when you connect the positive cable.

8. Starter Counter - Clear (With Auto Idle Stop System and when Starter Replaced)

Starter Counter Clear Procedure

NOTE:

  • If the starter is replaced, do this procedure.
  • If the starter is replaced, replace starter cut relay 1 and starter cut relay 2 at the same time.
  • Make sure the HDS is loaded with the latest software version.
  1. Replace starter cut relay 1 and starter cut relay 2.
  2. Connect the HDS to the DLC.
  3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode.
  4. Select IDLE STOP STARTER COUNTER CLEAR in the ADJUSTMENT MENU with the HDS.

Test

1. Starter Performance - Test

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Clamp the starter firmly in a vise.
  2. Make a connection for this test using the thickest (gauge) wire possible (preferably the same gauge as used on the vehicle).

    NOTE: To avoid damaging the starter, never leave the 12 volt battery connected for more than 5 seconds.

  3. Connect the 12 volt battery as shown, and check for continuity between the B terminal and the starter body. If there is continuity, it is working properly.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Disconnect the 12 volt battery from the starter body as shown, and check for continuity between the B terminal and the starter body. If there is no continuity, it is working properly.

Honda Pilot. Remove, Install, Replace, Check info

  1. Connect the starter to the 12 volt battery as shown, and confirm that the motor runs.
  2. If the electric current meets the specification when the 12 volt battery voltage is at 11.5 V, the starter is working properly.

Specification

  Electric Current: 80 A or less
