Honda Pilot: Thermostat Removal, Installation, and Test

Removal/Installation

1. Engine Coolant - Drain

2. Air Cleaner - Remove

3. Connector (Throttle Body) - Disconnect

4. Harness Holder - Move

6-Speed A/T

9-Speed A/T

1. 9-Speed A/T: Remove the connector clamp (A).
2. Move the harness holder (B).

5. Thermostat - Remove

1. Disconnect the lower radiator hose (A) and the water bypass hose (B).
2. Remove the thermostat.

6. All Removed Parts - Install

1. Install the parts in the reverse order of removal.

Test

Replace the thermostat if it is stuck in the open position at room temperature.

1. Thermostat - Test

To test a closed thermostat:

1. Suspend the thermostat (A) in a container of water. Do not let the thermostat and the thermometer (B) touch the bottom of the hot container.
2. Heat the water and check the temperature with a thermometer. Check the temperature at which the thermostat first opens, and at which it is fully open.
3. Measure the lift height of the thermostat when it is fully open.

Standard Thermostat

  Lift Height: 10 mm (0.39 in) min.

  Starts Opening: 176－183 ºF (80－84 ºC)

  Fully Open: 203 ºF (95 ºC)
