Inspection

1. Brake System - Inspect

Inspect the brake system components listed. Repair or replace any parts that are leaking or damaged.

Component Inspections:

Component Procedure Also check for
Master Cylinder Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
  • Reservoir, or master cylinder body.
  • Lines and grommets, and their joints.
  • Between master cylinder and booster.
Bulging seal at reservoir cap. This is a sign of fluid contamination.
Brake Hoses Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
  • Line joints and banjo bolt connections.
  • Hoses and lines, also inspect for twisting or damage.
Bulging, twisted, or bent lines.
Caliper Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
  • Piston seal.
  • Banjo bolt connections.
  • Bleed screw.
Seized or sticking caliper pins.
VSA Modulator-Control Unit Look for damage or signs of fluid leakage at:
  • Line joints.
  • Modulator-control unit.

Test

1. Brake System - Test

Brake pedal sinks/fades when braking

  1. Set the parking brake, and start the engine, then turn off the A/C. Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature (radiator fan comes on twice).
  2. Make sure the steering column lock lever is in the locked position. Attach a 50 mm (1.97 in) piece of masking tape along the bottom of the steering wheel, and draw a horizontal reference mark across it.
  3. With the transmission in P or N, press and hold the brake pedal lightly (about the same pressure needed to keep an A/T-equipped vehicle from creeping), then release the parking brake.
  4. While still holding the brake pedal, hook the end of the tape measure behind the brake pedal, then pull the tape up to the steering wheel. Note the measurement between the brake pedal and the reference mark on the steering wheel.
  5. Apply steady pressure to the brake pedal for 3 minutes.
  6. Watch the tape measure.
  • If the measurement increases 10 mm (0.39 in) or less, the master cylinder is OK.
  • If the measurement increases more than 10 mm (0.39 in), replace the master cylinder.

Cruise Control (ECM/PCM) Input Test

NOTE: Always make sure that you have the latest HDS software.

1. Connect the HDS.

2. Select PGM-FI system and check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in the DTC MENU on the screen and note it. Also check the freeze data and/or onboard snapshot data, and download any data found. Then refer to the indicated DTC's troubleshooting, and begin the appropriate troubleshooting procedure.

3. If no DTCs are found, do the following tests while monitoring parameters in the DATA LIST with the HDS.

4. If the input tests prove OK, replace the PCM.

NOTE: Intermittent failures are often caused by loose circuit connections. While monitoring cruise control inputs, flex the circuit wires, and note if any of the test results change.

Signal to be tested Test condition Parameter: Desired result Possible cause if result is not obtained
Cruise control system switch status Cruise control combination switch is not pressed The CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list should indicate DEFAULT when the cruise control combination switch is not pressed. If the CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list indicates SIGNAL LOST, check as shown:
  • Check for DTCs in the PGM-FI system and do the appropriate troubleshooting.
  • Faulty gauge control module
  • Faulty cruise control combination switch
  • An open in the wire between the gauge control module and the cruise control combination switch
  • A short to power in the wire between the gauge control module and the cruise control combination switch when the illumination switch is turned on

If the CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list indicates SIGNAL SHORT, check as shown:

  • Check for DTCs in the PGMFI system and do the appropriate troubleshooting
  • Faulty gauge control module
  • Faulty cruise control combination switch
  • A short to ground in the wire between the gauge control module and the cruise control combination switch

If the CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list indicates a different status, check for a faulty cruise control combination switch.

Cruise control main switch is pressed The CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list should indicate MAIN SW when the cruise control main switch is pressed.
Cancel switch is pressed The CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list should indicate CANCEL SW when the cancel switch is pressed.
Set/-switch is pressed The CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list should indicate SET SW when the set/switch is pressed.
Res/+ switch is pressed The CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM SWITCH STATUS in the HDS data list should indicate RESUME SW when the res/+ switch is pressed.
Cruise control indicator signal Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, press the cruise control main switch on and drive the vehicle above 25 mph (40 km/h) with the cruise control set and cancel the cruise control The CRUISE INDICATOR should indicate ON when the cruise control is set and OFF when the cruise control is canceled.
  • Faulty gauge control module
  • Faulty cruise control combination switch
  • An open in the wire between the gauge control module and the cruise control combination switch
  • A wire shorted to ground between the gauge control module and the cruise control combination switch
Brake pedal position switch signal Brake pedal pressed, then released The CRUISE BRAKE SW should indicate OPEN when the brake pedal is pressed and CLOSE when the brake pedal is released.
  • Faulty brake pedal position switch
  • Blown No. C7 (15 A) fuse in the under-dash fuse/relay box
  • An open in the wire between the PCM and the brake pedal position switch
  • A wire shorted to ground or power between the PCM and the brake pedal position switch
